• John E. Fenton Building

Location: 32 Derne Street

The Fenton building, located at the corner of Derne and Hancock streets, stands directly across from the North end of the State House. The six-story commercial space was originally built in 1913. In the early seventies, the building was purchased by Suffolk University in order to house the growing Colleges of Liberal Arts and Business Administration. Before the renovation and dedication of the Fenton building in 1975, many undergraduate classes were held in various small properties scattered across the North Slope of Beacon Hill. The expansion allowed the University to expand and consolidate its classroom and office space.

The building was named in honor of Judge John E. Fenton, a native of Lawrence, Massachusetts, who graduated from Suffolk Law School in 1924. Judge Fenton served on the Massachusetts Land Court for many years while maintaining an ever-constant watch over Suffolk University as a member of the Board of Trustees. In 1965, after decades of leadership in various positions, Fenton was appointed President of Suffolk University, a post he held until 1970.

The Fenton building is home to Academic, Administrative and Student Resources, and contains 10 classroom spaces.
