• Recommending a Book Purchase

Sawyer Library welcomes faculty input in collection development.  You know the curriculum needs of your students better than anyone, and we encourage you to request titles that would best meet the research needs of you and your students.

A few notes about requesting books:

First, since the Reference staff does a great deal of collection development, you should not assume that we do not own a book you are interested in. Before requesting it, please check our online catalog to make sure that we do not own it.

If it is not owned, please feel free to use this book request form to request the book.

Additional Notes:

  • All book requests are governed by budget constraints. And remember, like all University departments, the Library budget closes out for the fiscal year in the spring. Requests received in May, for example, will probably need to be deferred until the next fiscal year in July.
  • Are books needed for a new course being offered? Please plan ahead in this situation. Ordering and processing does take time. It is difficult for us to immediately acquire books for student use for/in the middle of the current semester.
  • Do you prefer not to use an online request form? If it is more convenient for you, feel free to bring or send catalog tearsheets, Amazon printouts, or other paper records of the books you are requesting. These may be dropped off at the Reference Desk or sent via inter-departmental mail to the Reference Department / Sawyer Library.(Please make sure that we have complete citation information including Author, Title, Publisher and ISBN.)
  • In most cases, if a trade paperback edition of a book is available, this is the edition we will purchase, so that our budget goes further.
  • Want to browse through Choice listings, or use the Choice search engine to find good academic-quality books in your field? Here is a link to our online catalog record for:

Choice: publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Associaton

Just follow the link in the yellow box.
