English Major Requirements

Requirements for a major in English are satisfied by 36 semester hours of course work in English (exclusive of the freshman all-college English requirement). 20 hours (five courses) must be chosen from the groups of English core courses-- one course from each of the five groups.  Lists of groups are available in the English Department office.  English Honors Seminar (English 521H, 522H, 523H, 524H, 525H, by invitation only), may replace one of the five core courses, or one of the English electives. 
Note that an English major must take English 213, and 214 or 217 or 218. 

In addition, the student must take three English electives, one of which must be a 300-or-higher level course.  These electives cannot include developmental courses 101, 102 or 103. An English major must earn the B.A. degree.

An English course that satisfies the Humanities option might also satisfy one of the English electives.  Consult an English adviser.
