Did You Know?

  • 1 in 3 children in the United States is at risk of suffering from hunger
  • In the US, more than 750,000 people are homeless on any given night
  • More than 800 million suffer from hunger worldwide
  • About 24,000 people die every day from hunger-related causes. That is one person every 3.6 seconds
  • 7.3 percent of US Households are at risk of hunger
  • Approximately 1.35 million children in the United States are homeless every year

All Month Long - S.O.U.L.S. Canned Food and Warm Clothing Drive

Clean out your closet and your pantry! Help those in need by donating your unused clothing and non-perishable food to local food pantries and homeless shelters. Last year, we collected over 2000 cans and 500 articles of clothing. All food donations will go to St. John the Evangelist Church and The Paulist Center; All clothing donations will go to On the Rise (a local women’s shelter) and The New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans. Donation boxes are located at the Hub (Donahue lobby), the S.O.U.L.S. Community Service Center (Donahue 424), the Beacon Hill Civic Association (74 Joy Street in Beacon Hill), and many academic departments.

Nov. 14, 22 & 30 - S.O.U.L.S. Canned Food & Warm Clothing Drive Dorm Storm
Nathan R. Miller Hall at 10 Somerset and 150 Tremont Residence Hall
Volunteers from S.O.U.L.S. will go door-to-door in the dorms collecting unwanted warm clothing and non-perishable food – everything from ramen and mac & cheese to canned goods. Please donate!

Thurs., Nov. 3 - “24 Hours on the Street: A Day in the Life of a Homeless Person” Photo Exhibit
1:00-2:30 p.m., Donahue 403
S.O.U.L.S. and St. John the Evangelist Church gave a camera to six Boston area homeless people. Join us for an opening reception to see the works and hear about the exhibit from Ron Tibbetts, the director of St. John’s food pantry program. Food will be provided.

Sun., Nov. 6 - Bag Lunches for the Homeless
12-2 p.m.
150 Tremont St. Res. Hall - Auditorium
Help us prepare bag lunches for the homeless people in Boston. We will get together in the 150 Tremont Auditorium to prepare sandwiches at noon to later take them to local shelters. All are invited – bring a guest! Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP at SOULS D424 or via e-mail at souls@suffolk.edu by Thursday, Nov. 3rd.

Tues., Nov. 8 - S.O.U.L.S. Second Annual Hunger Banquet
1:00 - 2:30 p.m., Donahue 403
Join faculty, staff, and students to see how others experience hunger, class, wealth distribution, and other social issues in an interactive role-playing meal. Clubs and groups are especially encouraged to attend. Cost of admission is $1 or a non-perishable good to be donated to the S.O.U.L.S. canned food drive.

Wed., Nov. 9 AND 23 - Wednesday Night Supper Club
4:45 - 7:00 p.m.
Meet at S.O.U.L.S. Community Service Center - Donahue room 424
Join members of the Suffolk Community to help those in need by serving meals at The Paulist Center’s food pantry. All are welcome to attend. We will meet in the S.O.U.L.S. office and travel as a group to the site.

Sun., Nov. 13 - Bag lunches for the Homeless

Tues., Nov. 15 - CSN Thanksgiving Luncheon
1 - 2:30 p.m., Donahue, 4th Floor - Student Activities Center Lounge
Come and celebrate Thanksgiving – Caribbean Style! Join us for a Caribbean feast. Cost of the meal is $1 or a non-perishable food item to be donated to the S.O.U.L.S. Canned Food Drive.

Thurs., Nov. 17 - Nick Flynn, Author of Another Bullsh*t Night in Suck City
1:00 p.m., C. Walsh Theater
Another Bullsh*t Night in Suck City a memoir that tells the story of “two lives and the trajectory that led Nick and his father into that homeless shelter, onto those streets, and finally to each other.”

Enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with Suffolk University’s international students in an event open to the entire Suffolk community – all are welcome to attend. Cost of admission is $1 or one canned food item to be donated to the S.O.U.L.S. Canned Food Drive.
