Note: The National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange: Equal Opportunities for International Experiences From studying for a year in France to teaching English in China to volunteering on conservation projects in Costa Rica to conducting research in Zimbabwe, the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange can provide information on how to include people with disabilities in international programs of all types. Established in 1995, the National Clearinghouse on Disability and Exchange (NCDE), managed by Mobility International USA (MIUSA) and sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, strives to increase the participation of people with disabilities in the full range of international exchange opportunities. NCDE provides international exchange organizations and colleges and universities, practical how-to resources and training on including people with disabilities into their programs. In addition, it provides free information and referrals to individuals as well as disability-related organizations about international exchange opportunities. By browsing its comprehensive web site (www.miusa.org) one can obtain additional information on NCDE, search the online database for disability organizations worldwide, fill in an online request for information, read stories by people with disabilities who have successfully participated in international exchange programs, find answers to frequently asked questions and order publications. Visitors can also fill out an online form to join NCDE’s colleague-to-colleague network, which links exchange professionals who would like to share experiences on disability and international exchange. NCDE resources include Building Bridges: A Manual on Including People with Disabilities in International Exchange Programs. The companion video, Building Bridges is a practical training tool for both new and experienced staff at international exchange organizations. The video is now available on CD ROM. Contact NCDE to receive a free copy of the CD for your organization. NASPA members are invited to join a new listserv launched by NCDE in November, 2001. This listserv provides a forum to share information about programs and services, ask and respond to questions about reasonable accommodations issues related to international exchange, share successful strategies for inclusion and learn about resources to facilitate a successful international experience. Contact NCDE to register for the listserv.
