Are merit scholarships available for transfer students?

Merit scholarships are competitive.  A transfer student interested in receiving a merit scholarship is encouraged to apply early.  Last year the average grade point average of those receiving a merit scholarship was a 3.55.  There is no separate application required.  Merit scholarships are awarded a funds available basis.  Merit scholarships are awarded to full-time students.

How do I apply for financial aid?

To apply for financial aid, you must submit the Suffolk University Financial Aid Application and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The suggested filing date for those interested in the fall semester is March 1.  For those interested in applying for the spring semester, the suggested filing date is November 1.  Applications for financial aid received after these dates will be reviewed on a funds available basis.  Financial aid awards are only considered for applicants who have already been admitted to the University.

Are transfer students guaranteed housing?

Unfortunately, they are not.  Housing is limited first-come, first-served.  For those students who receive on-campus housing for September, housing is guaranteed for one year only.  For those students who receive on-campus housing for January, only that one semester is guaranteed.  Transfer students are encouraged to speak to a staff member from the Office of Off-Campus Housing to discuss options (617-573-8647 or ocho@suffolk.edu).

How is a transfer application assessed for admission?

The average grade point average for entering transfer students is a 2.9.  If an applicant has more than one year of full-time study at another college or university, more emphasis is placed on this.  If you have completed less than one year at another college or university, both your high school and college record are considered.  Generally, a minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required to be considered for admission

Can I graduate with honors from Suffolk?

Students who complete a minimum of 60 semester hours at Suffolk can be considered to graduate cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude.  Transfer students who complete less than 60 semester hours at Suffolk can be considered to graduate with distinction, high distinction or highest distinction.

Does my grade point average from my previous institution transfer?

No.  Your grade point average at Suffolk reflects only the course work you complete at Suffolk.

What courses do you recommended to take prior to enrollment?

While there are no specific courses required in order to transfer, students are advised to take courses that would fulfill general education requirements at Suffolk.  For students interested in the College of Arts and Sciences, these include Freshman English, Literature, Science, Mathematics (Finite Mathematics or Calculus), Ethics, History, Humanities or Philosophy,  Modern Languages (for BA candidates), Psychology, Sociology, Government or Economics. For the Sawyer Business School recommended courses include, Freshman English, Science, Mathematics (Calculus), Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Business Ethics, Business Law, Business Organization, Applied Statistics, Speech, Principles of Marketing, and Computer Literacy.
