Boston the #1 College Destination
November 2007

It’s not just the school that makes the college experience memorable. The location of the school is a large part of that experience. Suffolk University is fortunate to be located in the heart of Boston, on historic Beacon Hill. Suffolk is the downtown university. Please read the following to learn more about Boston as a college town.

Based on information from the 2007 College Destinations Index by Collegia; when comparing 20 major metropolitan areas with populations greater than 2.5 million:

  • Boston ranked first overall as a college destination.
  • Boston’s academic environment ranked #1.
  • Boston’s student concentration is second only to San Diego.
  • Boston’s student population is diverse. The international student share of overall regional enrollment is higher than any of the other 19 cities in the survey.
  • Boston is an accessible city where 20.4% of its workers aged 16 or older commute by public transportation, bike, or walk.
  • When comparing entertainment amenities, only New York City and San Francisco surpassed Boston.
  • The earning potential in Boston is only surpassed by San Francisco and Washington, DC.
  • 38.2% of Boston’s workforce is employed in Creative Class jobs (Catalytx-2004). According to Richard Florida, the distinguishing characteristic of the creative class is that its members engage in work whose function is to “create meaningful new forms”. Only Washington, DC surpassed Boston in this measure.

I am pleased to inform you that Suffolk University has been selected by the Princeton Review as one of the "Best 366 Colleges" in the United States. Only 15% of four-year colleges were chosen for the book. The ranking lists are based on the Princeton Review’s survey of 120,000 students attending the 366 colleges in the book.
